State of the climate

Nice to see climate science getting some good PR for a change. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration brings together ten lines of evidence, from multiple data sets collected around the world, to show definitively that the world is getting hotter and that the consequences are already here.

Rip! An open source film about intellectual property

Rip! is a documentary about the clash between youth culture and corporate culture, using the mashup artist Girltalk as an example of how a lot of modern creativity is strictly illegal in a political environment that favours large corporations. It also touches on health issues: how the patenting of genes is inhibiting biological research. Rip! itself is an open source film, meaning that you are entitled to take the footage and make your own edit.

It’s a long film – just the trailer is included below – but set aside some time and you’ll be rewarded.

I’ve been raving about these satirical videos since seeing a couple of them at film festivals several years ago. Now they’re available on Youtube, although the versions I saw had English narration rather than subtitles. Start with “sushi”:
