Whatever Happened to the Pinup Aesthetic?

Posted by Martin Poulter on 31 January 2004

What happened to this female ideal that was everywhere in the middle of the last century?

Okay, the bodies are a bit unfeasible and I don’t expect a real cowgirl to show that much thigh, but these paintings of women are a lot more realistic and womanly than the images we’re bombarded with nowadays. Plus, there’s a cheekiness that has been lost: a particular wide-cheekboned naughty smile that has been given up today in favour of the porn-star pout.

The Daily Mail is something that pretty much all of the D00Dz’n’Chyx would like to put into Room 101. The B3ta boarders obviously feel the same way.

very sexy Minster Quartet,” writes Anne.

Blast Theory (performance artists)

Posted by Martin Poulter on 16 January 2004

Online players were dropped at random locations into a virtual Rotterdam. Using their arrow keys, they could then move around the city and chat with other players by typing messages. On the real streets of Rotterdam three runners from Blast Theory – equipped with handheld computers and satellite receivers – tracked down the online players. If a runner reached within 5 metres of an online player’s location that player was ‘seen’ and knocked out of the game.

A system of pressure pads allowed the audience to trigger recordings of different mind control techniques. A live video projection link provided surveillance of different areas of the space which, at times, was the only way to see the performance.”

Seeing these folks at the Arnolfini was one of my most delightfully strange experiences ever.
