St. Germain: Alabama Blues

Posted by Martin Poulter on 28 February 2003

Thanks to Jackie (via Tom) for introducing me to this fantastic music. For those who don’t know, St Germain is one of the pseudonyms of Ludovic Navarre, who spans a spectrum from house to jazz, employing actual jazz musicians as well as sampling old recordings.

He’s most famous for “Tourist”, and well before that, “Boulevard”, but this week I picked up a compilation of his mid-90s stuff; “From Detroit to St Germain”. “Alabama blues” samples an old blues vocal and puts it in a very modern dance track, a bit like Moby but years earlier and definitely more upbeat.

What’s more remarkable, though, is that the main chorus melody seems to be made by taking short extracts from several different vocal and stringing them together: it’s quite a shocking effect.

I’m easily amused

Yes, this is exceptionally puerile, but it made me laugh:

The Geeks of New Zealand

Posted by Paul Smith on 27 February 2003

See how the geeks of New Zealand are going about getting official recognition on the Internet.

I was going to add this under ‘Funnies’ but although the sentiment is amusing, it’s actually quite a serious point*, and we should applaud their antipodean stand!

* who am I kidding?

Arse race

Posted by emmap on 26 February 2003

It’s an arse-racing game, which I discovered when, in a despondent moment at work, I typed the word keyword “arse” into the Google Search Box.

Why Nerds Are Unpopular

Posted by Martin Poulter on 25 February 2003

I found this very interesting, sounds like the American system is worse than the UK. More wisdom from the pen of the great Paul Graham.
