Thanks to Jackie (via Tom) for introducing me to this fantastic music. For those who don’t know, St Germain is one of the pseudonyms of Ludovic Navarre, who spans a spectrum from house to jazz, employing actual jazz musicians as well as sampling old recordings.
He’s most famous for “Tourist”, and well before that, “Boulevard”, but this week I picked up a compilation of his mid-90s stuff; “From Detroit to St Germain”. “Alabama blues” samples an old blues vocal and puts it in a very modern dance track, a bit like Moby but years earlier and definitely more upbeat.
What’s more remarkable, though, is that the main chorus melody seems to be made by taking short extracts from several different vocal and stringing them together: it’s quite a shocking effect.
