Toss 140: the columnists, digested

Posted by Martin Poulter on 21 July 2009

Toss140.net is a Twitter spin-off where users summarise media columnists in 140 characters. For example, a column in the Daily Mail is abbreviated as “Ban this sick filth. Just thinking about it is turning me on.” Gerry Adams in the Guardian is condensed to “Global economic crisis? War? Climate change? Let’s get our priorities right: I still want a united Ireland!” A Daily Telegraph blog is rendered as “Ed Miliband using wind power to SAP AND IMPURIFY OUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS” It’s the brainchild of Bad Science author Ben Goldacre, and you can participate yourself via Twitter.

A Skeptics’ Wedding

Posted by Martin Poulter on 18 July 2009

Last week Sid Rodriguez (whom I’ve met) married his transatlantic love Rebecca Watson (whom I’ve not met, but she’s a skepchick– how cool is that?!) at James Randi’s Amazing Meeting in Las Vegas. Panel sessions at conferences aren’t normally like this.

Jools Holland plays Mrs Mills plays Widor’s Toccata

Posted by Martin Poulter on 14 July 2009

KDnC member Gavin shares this bit of comedy from his mate Duncan. It’s a well-observed impression of Jools Holland with some Bill Bailey musical humour, and a frighteningly good bonus impression at the end.

Babes of the BNP

Posted by Martin Poulter on 13 July 2009

The howlingly moronic ignorance of these “babes” is made up for by the hilarious interviewing style.
“Do you think Nick Griffin is actually gay, or is that just a vicious rumour?”
“No. I think it’s a vicious rumour.”
Comedy gold!

Now wash the BNP taste out of your mouth.

One and other: like Big Brother for slightly more intelligent people

Posted by glittrgirl on 10 July 2009

Have you tried the live video stream of Antony Gormley’s latest project, One and Other?

This is Gormley’s contribution to the series of artists invited to fill the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

The website is strangely compelling, with a new person puttng themselves under public scrutiny every hour on the hour, 24/7 until mid October.

Much better than BB10.

Real Men of Genius: The Collection

Posted by Martin Poulter on 2 July 2009

Okay, it’s an advert, but it’s a classic advert, or rather 40 different variations. Immortal tributes to real heroes such as “Mr. Beach Metal Detector Guy”, “Mr. Discount Airline Pilot Guy”, “Mr. Way Too Much Cologne Wearer”, “Mr. Silent Killer Gas Passer”. None of them have doctoral degrees, apparently.
