Nauseating advert for a revolting product from a company that must die

Posted by Martin Poulter on 15 January 2009

Gid and I have been pretty much speechless on discovering this video, and the resulting blog post has been difficult to write.

This visual diarrhea emerges from the cloaca of Microsoft Research. It features a little girl WHO MUST DIE, her charming family WHO MUST DIE, and her Daddy’s colleagues WHO ALSO MUST DIE, portrayed by actors the creators of the software WHO MUST BE BURNED WITH HOT IRONS, THEN DIE (it’s morally okay because they CLEARLY ARE NOT LOVED). They all want more music in their lives, and Microsoft helps them by hurling them into a meat grinder. No, it’s less tuneful than that: by slapping donkey dicks against their faces. No, it’s less dignified than that: by herding them into camps to learn that “Arbeit Macht Frei”. No, it inspires more despair at human cruelty than that.

No, the solution they offer is a program called Songsmith, which auto-accompanies them while they sing into their laptops. Not just in one painfully generic, ear-rapingly putrid style: no, in a variety of user-selectable styles ranging from “Rock shit” to “Salsa shit” taking in “Techno fucking shit” and “Bluegrass just fucking kill me now” on the way. Think of it as homeopathic music: muzak without a single molecule of talent or creativity left in it, purified at last of any pleasure or emotional expression.

If Microsoft really want to cause this much pain to us all – and let there be no more doubt that they do – then why don’t they just cut out the middle-man and force a pineapple into the rectum of any thinking, feeling human being alive enough to experience the joy of music, art, beauty or anything else which inspires love? Pointy end first?

“Oh yeah!”

Moist for Justice: Anonymous in Bristol

Posted by Martin Poulter on 12 August 2008

Continuing Martin’s adventures with Anonymous. Last Saturday the 8th was the second protest by the Bristol branch of Anonymous, attempting to cult-immunise the city. Ten protestors took part, some of whom commandeered a vessel yarrrr shipmates… erm, arrived by ferry. A walk around the city centre with flags, masks and placards prompted a lot of rubber-necking from passers-by, and some very cool photo opportunities. Photos and video below. Realistic Hollywood Sex Scene

Posted by Martin Poulter on 26 June 2008

What if sex in films was more like sex in real life? What if the hero had difficulty getting his last sock off and was nervous about the heroine going on top (“don’t crush my penis…”)?’s Realistic Sex Scene features some nudity- duh!

Beardyman beatboxing video remix

Posted by Martin Poulter on 25 June 2008

Beardyman‘s looped beatboxing and mr_hopkinson’s video editing have a lot in common. They both loop small bits of content on top of each other in way which starts off simple but builds into something jaw-dropping. Here they are united: David Hopkinson filmed Beardyman at a beatboxing convention, edited the video into sync with the loops in his trademark style and showed off the result at his excellent session in the recent Venn festival.

Operation Fair Game: STOP

Posted by Martin Poulter on 30 May 2008

The amazing anti-Scientology video work of Pelvidar is back! With outstandingly creative use of archive material and effects, Operation Fair Game: STOP hilariously debunks the claim that Anonymous wear masks to “intimidate”. Our own Damian is visible just after the twelve minute mark, in the Plymouth protest. As commenters on Enturbulation have suggested, these films are, hopefully, history books for the future.

Anonymous vs. Scientology: Story so far

Posted by Martin Poulter on 22 February 2008

I’ve already banged on about it a lot, but the Anonymous versus Scientology war really is the most interesting thing going on in online culture right now.

This 15-minute film, “The Road to 10th February 2008”, spends the first half giving the background to Scientology versus Anonymous, then the latter half showing the awesome scale of the worldwide protests, and the official Scientology response claiming to be under attack from a “terrorist group”. I’m pleased to say that two of the still images used for the London protest are mine.

Meanwhile, ChanologyASSIST hilariously uses Rick Astley to show how Anonymous has given up its hacking techniques in favour of peaceful protest, and another Anonymous member announces “Operation Reconnect”, a counterpart to Scientology’s Disconnection policy. Leaked information from within Scientology suggests that the protests are having an effect, and that the organisation is still planning its counter-moves.
