A beautiful equation

Posted by Martin Poulter on 25 February 2011

In one of the most impressive Ignite talks I’ve seen, filmed aboard the SS Great Britain, Oli Humpage makes a mathematical proof dramatic, funny and grippingly entertaining. Bravo! Oh and the talk includes a world record attempt, but blink and you’ll miss it.

Bayesianism in five minutes (by Martin Poulter)

Posted by Martin Poulter on 29 July 2010

The talks from the second Ignite Bristol evening were filmed by the Bristol-based Films@59 company and are now being put online. The evening started with my talk, “What is Bayesianism and why should you care?”

At my previous Ignite talk I was too ambitious in what I tried to pack into five minutes. For this second talk, I ditched the bullet points and concentrated on getting one basic idea across.

Keep an eye on the Ignite Bristol Youtube channel for more talks, which were all well-presented and very thought-provoking.

If you want to give a talk at Ignite Bristol yourself, the next date is 31 October 2010, the venue is once again the Tobacco Factory Theatre and the proposal form is that way.

Listen: Martin P is speaking

Posted by Martin Poulter on 30 March 2010

My five-minute talk at Ignite Bristol #1 discusses how inter-personal scientific methods have taken over from personal, subjective judgement as the foundation of knowledge. It focuses on psychological discoveries about the unreliability of perception and memory which have underlined the need for a scientific method.

Five minutes isn’t much time to develop an argument or explain terminology, so I threw out a lot of technical terms without explanation, hoping that people will look them up if interested. Maybe I should do a follow-up video to explain what I’m talking about in this video?

Thanks again to the Ignite Bristol team for their filming and editing.

Heritage of the homeless in Bristol

Posted by Martin Poulter on 27 March 2010

One of the most interesting talks from the recent Ignite Bristol event was this one, in which Rachael Kiddey talks about documenting the culture and history of homeless people in Bristol. It’s a fascinating project but not the sort of thing we hear about through mainstream media, so an ideal topic for a crowd-sourced talk.

Mob: a tale of the near future

Posted by Martin Poulter on 19 March 2010

Twitter, flash mobs, Chatroulette and Rickroll collide in a frighteningly plausible story of social media, delivered in a frenetic animated presentation. Thanks Ryan for the link.
