Posted by iansealy on 18 January 2007

Apologies to those of you who’ve seen this before, but I wanted my first post here to be something good. Here’s some fun you can have with Google Maps.

Apple iProduct

Posted by Martin Poulter on 18 January 2007

The iProduct is you. “Steve Jobs could take a dump, put it in an off-white plastic case, add two grey buttons and an LCD display, and you’d pay $600 for it.” So horribly true.

Save the weird animals!

Posted by Paul Ayres on 17 January 2007

Now I’m no tree hugger, but I must confess that I was drawn to this campaign from the Zoological Society of London to save some of the world’s weirdest looking creatures. So rather than all the attention being focussed on cute looking Pandas who can’t get it on, why not give it to some weird looking marsupial, bat or camel who really needs it.

Star Wars: “The Aluminum Falcon”

Posted by Tom Gidden on 13 January 2007

This one’s been doing the rounds for a while, but Digg just brought it to my attention, and you might have missed it. Too damn funny.

Seth MacFarlane from Family Guy does the voice of the Emperor.

Sexual Intelligence

Posted by Martin Poulter on 11 January 2007

Marty Klein’s Sexual Intelligence column is a witty and informed insight into the sexual angle on modern US politics, including the campaigns of the religious right. The current issue is a particularly fine read, dealing with the paradoxes of Miss USA and the appalling story of five-year old kids who are being punished for “sexual harassment”. EDIT: I should point out that this is a text-based site. Adult thoughts are expressed but it is not in other respects an “adult site”.

Celebrate DanBri!

Posted by Martin Poulter on 9 January 2007

He’s one of my favourite people ever, he’s thirty-five today and he’s arguably the coolest of the K3wl D00dz. Ladies and gentlemen, take a moment to consider the greatness of Daniel A. Brickley.

What are you optimistic about? Why?

Posted by Martin Poulter on 4 January 2007

The brainiest link of the year, every year, is the World Question Center, when publisher John Brockman sends a provocative question to dozens of top-flight intellectuals from the worlds of science, philosophy and culture. This year’s question is about optimism, and has resulted in many, many short essays that are well worth reading. An arbitrary selection: Howard Rheingold, Daniel Dennett, Stephen Pinker, Clay Shirky, Brian Eno and Cory Doctorow.

The Return of the Deliverables

Posted by Martin Poulter on 4 January 2007

About nine months ago now, four musicians gathered for a day to improvise an album. We’d decide on a style of music and a scale, then just play whatever came into our heads. I’ve only just got round to doing the mixing and editing, so here are the first two tracks from the (as yet unnamed) second album of The Deliverables

These feature Ale Fernandez on tabla and acoustic guitar, Jim Cogan on bass, Paul Smith on electric guitar and myself on synthesiser. The first album, improvised in a similar way, was Live in Hawaii.

Ag in Africa

Posted by Paul Smith on 3 January 2007

Just wanted to make more people aware of the blog Ag in Africa by a colleague currently on a year-long career break in South Africa. I look forward to reading her posts more than any other blog I read, and it’s made me completely change my outlook on a few things. It’s a brilliant mix of politics, humour, and some great photo’s, all told with a clarity, honesty and bluntness which you come to expect from our Sarah. Thoroughly recommended, and it makes for a sobering start to 2007.

I just wanted to say…

Posted by glittrgirl on 3 January 2007

… no link today, but I wanted to say Happy New Year to my fellow authors here, very few of whom I have met, all of whom I admire. And anyone else who reads this blog… Happy New Year to you too!
