Star Guitar video

Posted by Martin Poulter on 13 December 2003

A highlight of the fantastic new DVD compilation of director Michel Gondry is this video for the Chemical Brothers, which has become one of my all time favourite short films.

You see the French landscape passing in the view from a train window, but something isn’t right: there are multiple copies of buildings, bridges and other trains. What’s more, these are appearing on screen in time with elements of the music; a shed for a bass drum, a telegraph pole for a snare, a person on a train platform for each note of the sung melody. It takes many viewings to take it all in.

The idea of visual music is not new, but the stunningly realistic computer graphics make this a music of everyday things, rather than of abstract shapes.
