I’ve just come from the Bristol opening of RESFest film festival, which has been one of the best fivers that I’ve ever spent. Several short films in the programme are destined to become classics. One of these is the abstract but visually stunning We Have Decided Not to Die. A small abridged version is available in Quicktime.
Another highlight, and also originating from Australia, was Ward 13, a claymation as funny and well put together as Wallace and Gromit, but with twisted sadistic violence. The official site has trailers, but sell your own family to get this on video.
Finally, Oedipus the Movie recreates the classic story using vegetable produce, and is played completely straight. Again, the official site has stills and production notes but not the film itself. Three more days of film festival to go!

Chris_M sends this compilation of one-liners that has been doing the rounds. The classic humour of Autumn 2004 is here. For some reason, I warm to “The world is a dangerous place; only yesterday I went into Boots and punched someone in the face.” Update March 2007: changed broken link.

“Master View”, the new CD/DVD from video artists Hexstatic, has some pretty creative video renderings of their tunes. This is the track that grips me most. Owing a little to the video for Autechre’s “Gantz Graf”, this uses 3-D modelling to make abstract visual music. If you buy the DVD you get a stereoscopic version (and free 3-D glasses with it). This is a low-quality Quicktime preview.

“If you’re against gay sex, why are you going around with that pole up your ass?” The spin doctors for the US presidential debates get a drubbing from Triumph the insulting dog.
Update Feb 2007: iFilm are no longer hosting this and I can’t find it anywhere on the net. Pity. Sorry!

I’ve raved in the past about 1990s video artists Emergency Broadcast Network. EBN have recently reformed and member Greg Deocampo’s site has Windows Media of some of his projects, including a grand piano customised for video scratching.

Not enough people have heard of this satire on late 70s science education programmes, but for those who have it is one of the funniest things on TV in the past few years. The companion web site continues the humour.

Recently, I’ve been wondering how the hell Bush manages to have anyone vote for him at all. Now I know - Bush supporters still believe everything he ever told them, even the things that have been totally and utterly discredited.
Here’s a survey in which they all claim Hussein bathed in WMD and hangs out with Bin Laden:

I have long hoped that someone would do this research, and its results confirm my impressions from debates about the war and the US presidency. It turns out Bush supporters are very much less informed about the world and about their candidate than are Kerry supporters.
